2021年,德国柏林艺术大学校园内的一个平静的夜晚,我发现了同班同学 Maiy C. Hồ 自杀的遗体。Maiy不仅是同学,也是交换期间我在班上最熟悉的朋友,却以这样的方式终结了自己的生命。在这之后,我花了一年的时间来消化这哥事件带来的冲击。2022年,我以信件的形式撰写了影片的剧本,素材取自Maiy写给她同父异母弟弟的信件——他是她在这个世界上唯一的至亲——同时,我也重返并拍摄了柏林艺术大学(UdK)的校园,那是我们曾共度最多时光的地方,也是我发现她尸体的地方。
穿行于柏林的日常景观之中,影片《空谷足音》在我的想象中重建了她最后一次漫步于那些熟悉场所时,心中或许曾有过的思绪。
尽管我还无法与这段创伤完全和解,我仍选择以这位挚友葬礼的形式,完成我在巴黎国立高等美术学院的艺术硕士毕业展览(DNSAP)——那是一场我在现实中未能够出席的葬礼——一个直面创伤造成的心理深渊的展览。环绕投影区四周,极简排布的半透明黑色轻纱滤去外部光线,将整个装置笼罩于深沉的幽暗之中。沉浸式的声音氛围与对逝者生命最后时刻的重构交织融合,这件作品渴望触达一种集体性的疗愈:那是我与Maiy的弟弟,以及我们在柏林艺大同班同学之间,隔着时间与距离共同承担的悲伤。
In 2021, after discovering the body of Maiy C. Hồ — a German-Vietnamese transgender friend who had tragically taken her own life — I spent a year traversing this grief. A year later, in 2022, I composed the film’s script in the form of a farewell letter, drawing on the letters Maiy had written to her half-brother — her only close family member in this world. I filmed the campus of the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), the place where we spent most of our time together, and where I had found her. Traversing a Berlin everyday, the film After Words reconstitutes, in my imagination, what her thoughts might have been during her final passage through the places that had been so familiar to her.
Even though the wounds were still raw, I presented my graduation exhibition (DNSAP) at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in the form of a funeral for this friend — a funeral I had never attended. The exhibition plunges into the abysses of the human psyche confronted with grief. Surrounding the projection area, a minimalist arrangement of translucent black veils filters the outside light, immersing the installation in deep penumbra. Combining an immersive sonic atmosphere with the reconstitution of the deceased’s final moments, the exhibition aspires to a collective healing — one I share, at a distance, with Maiy’s half-brother and with our classmates at the UdK.
